Anxiety About Dental Treatment

Some patients may be anxious about going to the dentist, worrying about the effectiveness of localized anesthetic and anticipation of pain, the cost of the procedure, the sounds and smell of the dental office, negative past experiences, or feeling like the dentist is rushed or is neglecting their concerns. If not addressed, dental anxiety can lead to unnecessary oral health problems as a result of avoiding the dentist, which in turn can end up leading to much more time spent in the dental chair when treatment is the only option.

If you are looking for a dentist, ask friends and relatives for recommendations. Good reviews from someone you trust about a dentist can significantly reduce anxiety. Please read reviews from real patients to see what our patients say about us.

There are a number of ways that you can work with us to feel at ease about your visit, whether it’s the first or tenth time at the office. We help reduce your anxiety before you even arrive at our office. This process begins when you make your appointment. Our office staff has been trained to tell you what to expect and to answer any questions you have to ensure that you will be comfortable during your visit. An understanding of your dental services and treatment can help to relieve dental anxiety. Make sure you ask questions and request informational materials, if desired. The most important factor in overcoming dental anxiety is a good dentist/patient relationship.

When you visit us for a procedure, you may at times need local anesthesia to eliminate pain. Some patients may need sedation to calm fears that may accompany procedures, and we can refer you to a dentist who provides sedation dentistry should you need this.

Four Tips to Relieve Anxiety

  • Avoid caffeine before a dental appointment.
  • Eat high-protein foods, which produce a calming effect, unlike sugary foods.
  • During the procedure, focus on breathing regularly and slowly. When you are nervous you tend to hold your breath, which decreases oxygen levels and can increase anxiety.
  • Talk to the dentist about specific fears and concerns. He or she can go a long way to dispel any negative or frightening images.
