Dental Cleanings & Check-ups
What happens at a checkup?
Our hygienist will give your teeth a thorough cleaning, and one of the dentists at AK Dental Arts will examine the health of your teeth, mouth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Any fillings or restorations will be checked to ensure they are still in good condition. Over time, chewing, grinding, or clenching can cause wear or damage to your teeth, and the doctor and oral hygienist will check for any signs of damage.
Periodic cleaning removes tartar (mineralized plaque) from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities, gingivitis (gum disease), and periodontal disease (more severe gum disease with bacterial pockets and possible bone and tooth loss). Dental hygienists remove hardened deposits not removed by routine cleaning.
Plaque may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult to reach in routine tooth brushing. We recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned every six months. More frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during treatment of dental and other oral disorders. Between cleanings by a dental hygienist, good oral hygiene helps to prevent cavities, tartar build-up, and gum disease.
X-rays show the condition of your teeth, its roots, jaw placement and the overall composition of your facial bones. X-rays can help determine the presence or degree of gum disease, abscesses and abnormal growths. X-rays can show the exact location of impacted or unerupted teeth and pinpoint the location of cavities and other signs of disease that may not be possible to detect through a visual examination. How often you need x-rays is based on your individual needs, whether you’re a new patient or a follow-up patient, adult or child. In most cases, new patients require a full set of mouth X-rays to evaluate oral health status, including any underlying signs of gum disease, and for future comparison. Follow-up patients may require X-rays to monitor their gum condition or their chance of tooth decay. X-rays are not prescribed indiscriminately, and your dentist will only ask for X-rays when there is a need.

Digital X-ray System: reduces radiation exposure, shortens visits, reduces waste
Our office uses the Dexis digital x-ray system. This unique x-ray system delivers only a fraction of the radiation used by traditional x-ray machines. As a result, you are exposed to much less radiation per x-ray and over a lifetime. The images are very sharp and can be edited to create treatment plans or e-mailed to other doctors. The x-ray images appear immediately on the computer screen so there is no need to wait for developing and processing, saving you time, and with less waste of x-ray mounts and developing materials, saving costs.
Preventing Dental Caries (Dental Cavities)
Prevent Cavities with Xylitol or MI Paste
Dental caries (cavities), are soft ares of the tooth caused by bacteria. The acids produced by these bacteria break the basic building blocks of the tooth structure down resulting in the loss of the integrity of the tooth. In the past, dentistry has concentrated on fluoride as a help to strengthen the tooth against decay. Recent evidence suggests that some people are more prone to cavities due to the makeup of their saliva. Although fluoride is still used, there is currently a shift to newer products that may be more effective. Xylitol (a sugar substitute found in many chewing gums and candies) as well as MI paste have been found to hold dental cavities in check. Please call our office for help in preventing dental cavities.
